CNZ National Cup Series Round 1 Wanaka - Apr 28th/29th
I made my way down to the first round of the National Cup Series, at Basecamp Wanaka, with Sam Fraser, the 2011 Opens National Champion. The drive down was amazing however the competition turnout was poor.
The route setting was surprisingly soft for this comp as I topped out all 4 of my qualification climbs and on 3 of the climbs I managed to clip the last clip several moves before the end. I ended up 3rd in the Open Male Lead Category losing to Sam and Josiah who both topped the climb which ended up being a good test run for the new rule of deciding the winner on time instead of holding a super final. After some smart comments by Sam at the Opens prize giving the setters up'd their game for the U18 and Junior Finals making sure none of us topped our climbs. In the speed climbing me and Josiah ended up in the final for Opens, which happened at every round last year, this year he beat me meaning he clean sweeped every category he entered.
The National Cup Series has been sponsored by Sterling Ropes and Black Diamond this year meaning every comp there will be a rope given away as well as some Black Diamond prize packs, also the winners of their age group this year will win a prize from Sterling Ropes or Black Diamond so hopefully this will motivate people to enter all of the later rounds in the series. While down in Wanaka I also found that my time of 4.7 on the Clip'nClimb speed wall had been broken to a new time of 4.4 but I didn't get the chance to jump on the wall and try reclaim my record.

Last day climbing before Wanaka - 25th Apr
Went down to the gym for the last time before the comp, made me feel pretty unfit jumping on the final lead from the regional's again. Lisa got some pretty cool photos from the scissor lift while me and Zach did leads.

North Island Regionals Round 3 Hamilton - Apr 1st
Round 3 was my home ground comp in Hamilton. The finals were held in
isolation which was good prep for the upcoming Nationals. I won the
final but unfortuantly the Tauranga crew was a no show making the win
feel a bit hollow. The prizes as per usual for the Hamilton comp were
great, with tonnes of gear given away.

North Island Regionals Round 2 Taupo - Mar 10th
The second round of the North Island Regionals was held in Taupo, I
thought I had this competition in the bag with the final climb but I got
a big bit of chalk stuck in my eye mid climb, which made seeing the
second half of the climb particularly difficult meaning I placed 2nd
place to Wiz. The prizes at the Taupo comp this year were epic,
including a rope and bungee passes.
