CNZ National Cup Series Round 1 Wanaka - Apr 28th/29th

I made my way down to the first round of the National Cup Series, at Basecamp Wanaka, with Sam Fraser, the 2011 Opens National Champion. The drive down was amazing however the competition turnout was poor.

The route setting was surprisingly soft for this comp as I topped out all 4 of my qualification climbs and on 3 of the climbs I managed to clip the last clip several moves before the end. I ended up 3rd in the Open Male Lead Category losing to Sam and Josiah who both topped the climb which ended up being a good test run for the new rule of deciding the winner on time instead of holding a super final. After some smart comments by Sam at the Opens prize giving the setters up'd their game for the U18 and Junior Finals making sure none of us topped our climbs. In the speed climbing me and Josiah ended up in the final for Opens, which happened at every round last year, this year he beat me meaning he clean sweeped every category he entered.

The National Cup Series has been sponsored by Sterling Ropes and Black Diamond this year meaning every comp there will be a rope given away as well as some Black Diamond prize packs, also the winners of their age group this year will win a prize from Sterling Ropes or Black Diamond so hopefully this will motivate people to enter all of the later rounds in the series. While down in Wanaka I also found that my time of 4.7 on the Clip'nClimb speed wall had been broken to a new time of 4.4 but I didn't get the chance to jump on the wall and try reclaim my record.

Results
Open Male Lead: 3rd
Junior (u20) Male Lead: 2nd
Open Male Speed: 2nd
Junior (u20) Male Speed: 1st

North Island Regionals Round 3 Hamilton - Apr 1st

Round 3 was my home ground comp in Hamilton. The finals were held in isolation which was good prep for the upcoming Nationals. I won the final but unfortuantly the Tauranga crew was a no show making the win feel a bit hollow. The prizes as per usual for the Hamilton comp were great, with tonnes of gear given away.

North Island Regionals Round 2 Taupo - Mar 10th

The second round of the North Island Regionals was held in Taupo, I thought I had this competition in the bag with the final climb but I got a big bit of chalk stuck in my eye mid climb, which made seeing the second half of the climb particularly difficult meaning I placed 2nd place to Wiz. The prizes at the Taupo comp this year were epic, including a rope and bungee passes.

North Island Regionals Round 1 Rotorua - Feb 25th

The North Island regionals have kicked off for 2012 with the 5th round moving from Turangi to Otorohonga. The turnout for the 1st round in Rotorua was great and Hamilton dominated the podiums with four 1st's, two 2nd's and 5 3rd's.

I ended up topping the first two routes however I fell off on the headwall of the final lead, placing 2nd to a 3 way tie between the Tauranga crew consisting of Wiz, Peanut and Isaac.

NBS Round 2 Froggatt Edge - Feb 18th

This year the National Bouldering Series made a return to Froggatt Edge. The original guide was updated and cut down to the best 94 problems ranging from VM to V11 and the problems were given a desperately need clean. .The turnout was pretty good with 66 competitors all up, from as far as Wellington.

This year I decided to enter the Endurance category and ended up with all 25 of my problems being V2 or harder giving me a total score of 70 points, with Nathan Kelly in 2nd with 40 points and Daniel Newth in 3rd with 39 points.

Grass Roots Fundraiser Bouldering Event - Jan 26th

http://www.facebook.com/pages/LM-Photography/217302638375218The quarry is open again, now called the AGS Rockwall and on January the 26th a fundraising boulder comp was held at Extreme Edge, Panmure. The comp consisted off 30 odd boulder problems worth varying points based on the difficultly and  two hours to complete as many as possible. I ended up with three problems I couldn't complete, one in the UV cave that was crazy hard, a real reachy problem that i kept peeling off on the last hold and a real staunch slopey problem that Zane managed to get with only one minute remaining meaning I ended up with second.

If you are interested in climbing at the quarry you now have to be registered, (register here: http://www.aucklandclimber.org.nz/quarry.html) when you register you will receive a tag which must be worn while climbing at the quarry. All donations go towards keeping the crag open, if your interested in reading about why the crag was shut and how it got reopened read this page: http://www.mojozone.co.nz/forum/mt-eden-quarry-1

Kick things off

Well I finally decided that it's time to get a blog up and start documenting my climbing. Just to kick things off, hi I'm Daniel Krippner and I've been climbing for about 3 and a half years, this year I am starting a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Waikato University. I was awarded the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship so that I can keep climbing while I'm at university provided I can keep up my grades, extend myself with leadership opportunities and keep climbing at a high level. In the last couple months I also created an account on www.8a.nu to keep track of my climbing outdoors. The next few posts on here will just be about whats already happened this year so far.
